FAQs
What is your investment thesis?
We are keeping our investment thesis loose to accommodate the interests of our LP's in the fund. We would like to look at seed stage opportunities, and are industry agnostic. We will lean more heavily towards US-based companies, however seeing that the professional world is becoming more remote, we will consider international startups as well. We will make investments based on our collective experience, and consider our ability to support the startup on their path to growth.
How much is required to invest?
Each investor contributes $15K USD to create a pooled investment fund.
Over the course of one year, each Group collaboratively vets investment opportunities and decides on how to invest the funds. Each investment contributes a small fee that is put towards the operating costs for the life of the fund.
How will the funds be managed?
Each fund will be a separate legal entity with its own bank account and tax returns. Our General Partners, Joanne and Leila, will manage them. There are no management fees or carried interest.
How many investors will be part of the fund?
The range is between 25-35 women Limited Partners for each Fund.
Why is Equity Lab just for women?
Women are underrepresented as angel investors and WEL created this initiative to address this issue. Having more women involved in investing is beneficial because:
Women are perceived to be risk averse, and WEL is working to break these stereotypes by having women make bets in the riskiest stage of companies, in the seed stage.
More women involved in company ownership and on boards translates to more effective corporate decision-making and outcomes.
Adding women investors to the industry provides more cash to the start-up ecosystem, along with skills, contacts and experience to help grow successful companies.
Women investors are more likely to fund women-led businesses, and female entrepreneurs are more likely to achieve a successful exit if their investors include women.
